The Performance-based Standards (PbS) State/Agency Coordinators Training and Awards Night in Chicago, Illinois is now less than two weeks away. Participants have been waiting to see the results of PbS’ annual Kids Got Talent Contest. PbS challenges facilities and youths to share their talents with the country and invites the winner to come perform live at the Awards Night. We received over 90 great performance submissions, and after careful deliberation 14 finalists were chosen. Today, we reveal the winner in the Group Category for the 2017 PbS Kids Got Talent Contest!

Austin N., Brendon B., Charles J., Jeremiah F. and Dustin W. from Rogue Valley Youth Correctional Facility submitted a music video of them performing the song “I Wanna Be Like You,” from Walt Disney’s 1967 film The Jungle Book. These youths played instruments and sang a fun, upbeat cover of the Disney hit, but made it even more impressive by filming and choreographing their own music video for the song. Trumpet, bass, ukulele and the drums bring it all together as they make their dance with frequent cutaways to group-shots, sunglasses and solo performances.

Our judges “love the quirkiness and beautiful message,” “loved the team aspect,” said it was “very creative” and “a lot of fun.” We in the office have to agree! Between the talents shown by the instrumentals, vocals, dancing and the directing of a whole video, along with the positive message of the song applied to juvenile justice, this submission truly earned First Place! Congratulations to Austin, Brendon, Charles, Jeremiah and Dustin from Rogue Valley Youth Correctional Facility for getting first place in the Group Category for the 2017 PbS Kids Got Talent Contest! Thank you for sharing your talents!

Stay tuned next week for the announcement of the Individual Winner of the 2017 PbS Kids Got Talent Contest!
