Job Opportunity for Juvenile Justice Deputy Commissioner

The Department of Children Services is seeking to fill a Deputy Commissioner – Juvenile Justice position.  This position is stationed in Nashville, but manages a staff statewide.

Leadership/Supervision

  • Provides leadership and direction to the Division of Juvenile Justice
  • Meets with key leadership of DJJ regularly to reinforce and refine philosophy, vision, mission and values
  • Holds leadership accountable for performance and progress
  • Participates in weekly meeting with senior staff and monthly meetings with all key staff
  • Periodically visits all facilities and regional offices for evaluation and assessment of management
  • Stays current on best practices by regularly reviewing trade publications
  • Conduct performance reviews with direct reports
  • Direct and consult with staff as needed on specific issues and projects
  • Attend National conferences – ACA and others
  • Interface with Commissioner and other leadership on general and specific issues

Public Relations

  • Communicate DJJ philosophy and mission to staff and stakeholders statewide
  • Raise awareness of evidence-based models of preventing and reducing delinquency as a public speaker to community groups statewide
  • Leads regular meetings around the state with interested groups
  • Builds, cultivates and maintains relationship with general assembly, judiciary, state and local officials, agencies and providers
  • Participates in meetings of the general assembly, judicial conferences and other forums where public policy regarding juvenile delinquency is a topic
  • Communicates regularly via newsletter and specific correspondence regarding DJJ topics
  • Prepared to respond to media, crisis management, phone calls and request for assistance

Qualifications:  Bachelor’s Degree in sociology, social work, psychology or a related field with 5 or more years of increasingly responsible professional work in social work or related field with at least 5 years in Juvenile Justice.
